Assigner: NLnet Labs

Description

The vulnerability gives a role that is restricted to a list of CAs (cas = [...]) its full permission set for every request that is not tied to a CA, including the bulk import endpoint POST /api/v1/bulk/cas/import. It adds a new child CA under any existing CA, gives the child any of that CA's resources, and creates the ROAs given in the request

Executive Summary

This vulnerability allows a restricted role with limited CA permissions to gain full access for requests not tied to a specific CA. It affects endpoints like POST /api/v1/bulk/cas/import, enabling the creation of new child CAs under existing ones, granting access to resources, and creating ROAs from the request data.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with restricted access could escalate privileges to perform unauthorized actions such as creating new CAs, accessing sensitive resources, or manipulating ROAs. This could lead to data breaches, unauthorized system access, or service disruption.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or modification of sensitive data, violating confidentiality and integrity requirements in GDPR and HIPAA. Non-compliance may result in legal penalties, reputational damage, and loss of trust.

Mitigation Strategies

Restrict role permissions to only necessary CAs and endpoints. Review and audit all requests to POST /api/v1/bulk/cas/import. Remove unauthorized child CAs and revoke any improperly granted resources or ROAs.
