Description

The User Frontend – Membership, User Registration, User Profile, User Directory & Content Restriction with Frontend Post Submission plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the '<taxonomy_field_name> (default: 'category')' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 4.3.13 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. Exploitation requires the target installation to have configured a Taxonomy field in text-input mode with guest post submission enabled on at least one frontend form.

Executive Summary

This is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in a WordPress plugin called User Frontend. It allows unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious scripts into web pages via a taxonomy parameter due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. The scripts execute when users access the compromised pages.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress installations for the User Frontend plugin versions up to 4.3.13. Inspect frontend forms for taxonomy fields in text-input mode with guest post submission enabled. Look for unusual script tags or payloads in stored content.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, attackers could steal user sessions, redirect users to malicious sites, or perform actions on their behalf. This could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, account takeovers, or defacement of the website.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to data breaches, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for protecting user data. Organizations may face fines, legal penalties, and reputational damage due to non-compliance with data protection regulations.

Mitigation Strategies
