Description

The WP Visitor Statistics (Real Time Traffic) plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'browser' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 8.7.1 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. The payload is stored via an unauthenticated HTTP request to the public visitor tracking endpoint (wmcAction=wmcTrack) and executes when the bundled jqPlot PieRenderer inserts the HTML-decoded series label directly as HTML in the authenticated administrator's browser.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) flaw in the WP Visitor Statistics plugin for WordPress. It allows unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious scripts via the 'browser' parameter due to poor input sanitization and output escaping. The injected scripts execute when an administrator views affected pages, as the plugin renders the malicious input directly as HTML.

Detection Guidance

Check for suspicious HTTP requests to the visitor tracking endpoint (wmcAction=wmcTrack) in server logs. Look for unauthenticated POST requests with the 'browser' parameter containing script tags or unusual payloads. Inspect WordPress plugin files for unauthorized modifications or injected scripts in the plugin's tracking functionality.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could steal sensitive session cookies, perform actions on your behalf, or redirect you to malicious sites. Since the payload is stored, any visitor to your site could unknowingly trigger the script. Administrators are particularly at risk as the script executes in their browser context.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to user data, violating GDPR's data protection requirements. For HIPAA, it may compromise protected health information if exploited. Both standards mandate protecting user data from unauthorized access or disclosure.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the WP Visitor Statistics plugin to the latest version immediately. If an update is unavailable, disable the plugin until a patch is released. Review server logs for signs of exploitation and remove any injected scripts from affected pages. Consider implementing a web application firewall to block malicious requests targeting the tracking endpoint.
