Executive Summary

This vulnerability involves improper neutralization of shell metacharacters in the timezone configuration field of certain Barracuda appliance products. An authenticated administrator can inject OS commands that execute with root privileges when the crafted timezone value is processed.

Detection Guidance

Check Barracuda appliance logs for unusual timezone configuration changes or command execution attempts. Review system logs for root-level processes spawned from timezone-related services. Inspect network traffic for outbound connections from Barracuda devices to unexpected destinations.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with administrative access could execute arbitrary OS commands with root privileges, potentially leading to full system compromise, data theft, or unauthorized modifications on affected Barracuda appliances.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest security patches from Barracuda for all affected appliances. Disable timezone configuration changes until patches are applied. Restrict administrative access to Barracuda devices to trusted users only. Monitor for suspicious activity in system logs.
