Description

The WP Remote Users Sync WordPress plugin before 2.2.0 does not adequately restrict access to the user export files it writes beneath the public web root, relying on an Apache access-control file that other web servers such as Nginx ignore, which allows an unauthenticated attacker who requests the export's predictable file name while it is present to retrieve the exported users' personal data.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects the WP Remote Users Sync WordPress plugin before version 2.2.0. It allows unauthenticated attackers to access sensitive user data by exploiting predictable file names stored in a public web directory. The plugin relies on an Apache access-control file for restrictions, which other web servers like Nginx ignore, making the data publicly accessible.

Detection Guidance

Check for the presence of the WP Remote Users Sync plugin version before 2.2.0. Look for export files in the web root directory with predictable names. For Apache servers, verify if .htaccess restrictions are in place. For Nginx or other servers, manually inspect the directory for exposed files.

Impact Analysis

If you use the vulnerable plugin version, an attacker could retrieve exported user data, including personal information, without authentication. This could lead to privacy breaches, identity theft, or unauthorized access to sensitive data.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability likely violates GDPR and HIPAA due to unauthorized access to personal data. GDPR requires protecting personal data, and HIPAA mandates safeguarding protected health information. A breach could result in legal penalties and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the WP Remote Users Sync plugin to version 2.2.0 or later immediately. Remove any existing export files from the web root directory. Ensure proper access controls are configured for the directory where exports are stored.
