Executive Summary

This is a Reflected Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Duplicator WordPress plugin versions before 5.1.0. It occurs because the plugin does not properly sanitize and escape user input in the 'logname' parameter before reflecting it on an administrative page. An attacker can exploit this by tricking a logged-in administrator into clicking a malicious link, which executes the injected script in the administrator's session.

The vulnerability affects both the free Duplicator plugin and the premium Duplicator Pro plugin.

Detection Guidance

Check the installed version of the Duplicator or Duplicator Pro WordPress plugins. If the version is below 5.1.0, the system is vulnerable. Use commands like 'wp plugin list' in WordPress CLI or inspect the plugin files directly.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could steal session cookies, perform actions on your behalf, or inject malicious scripts into your WordPress admin dashboard. This could lead to unauthorized access, data theft, or further compromise of your WordPress site.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or data breaches, which may violate compliance requirements such as GDPR (data protection) or HIPAA (health information privacy). Organizations must address this to maintain regulatory compliance and protect sensitive data.

Mitigation Strategies

Update both the Duplicator and Duplicator Pro plugins to version 5.1.0 or later immediately. Remove any unnecessary administrative access and monitor for suspicious activity.
