Executive Summary

This vulnerability in Sonatype Nexus Repository 3 allows the signing passphrase of an APT or YUM repository to be exposed through an internal REST endpoint. The passphrase protects the private key used for signing repository metadata. It affects users with only read privileges for administering the repository.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check Nexus Repository 3 versions between 3.93.0 and 3.97.x. Verify if any user accounts with only read privileges for APT or YUM repositories can access internal REST endpoints. Review logs for unusual access to signing passphrase endpoints.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with read access could obtain the signing passphrase, allowing them to decrypt the private key. This could lead to repository metadata being signed with malicious content, compromising the integrity of software packages distributed through the repository.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Nexus Repository 3 to version 3.98.0 or later. If untrusted accounts had read privileges, rotate the signing key pair and passphrase. Restrict repository administration privileges to trusted accounts and limit network access to the Nexus Repository interface and REST API.
