Description

Sonatype Nexus Repository 3 does not require realm administration permission when a user creates a Rut Auth capability. A user who holds only the capability creation permission (nexus:capabilities:create) can create this capability, which turns on header-based authentication for the instance. A remote client can then authenticate as an existing user, including an administrator, without credentials.

Executive Summary

Sonatype Nexus Repository 3 has a privilege escalation vulnerability where a user with only capability creation permission can enable header-based authentication without needing realm administration rights. This allows remote clients to authenticate as any existing user, including administrators, without providing credentials.

Detection Guidance

Check Nexus Repository 3 configurations for unauthorized Rut Auth capabilities by reviewing the list of enabled capabilities in the admin interface. Look for any Rut Auth capability that was created by users without administrative privileges. Use the Nexus Repository API to list capabilities and verify permissions.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could gain unauthorized access to the Nexus Repository instance by impersonating legitimate users, including administrators. This could lead to data breaches, unauthorized modifications, or complete system compromise if sensitive repositories are accessed.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating confidentiality requirements in GDPR and HIPAA. Organizations may face compliance violations, legal penalties, and reputational damage if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade to Nexus Repository 3.98.0 or later. Restrict capability creation privileges to trusted administrators only. Review and remove any unauthorized Rut Auth capabilities or realms. If Rut Auth is unused, disable and remove the capability entirely.
