Description

ESF-IDF is the Espressif Internet of Things (IOT) Development Framework. From 5.5.5 until 5.5.6, 6.0.4, and 6.1.1, the esp_tee trap entry in esp_tee_vectors_plic.S and esp_tee_vectors_clic.S saves a caller-controlled register frame through the REE-supplied stack pointer before switching to the trusted TEE stack or validating the pointer. A local unprivileged REE application can direct this machine-mode write into TEE-exclusive memory on ESP32-C5, ESP32-C6, ESP32-C61, and ESP32-H2 devices, breaking the REE/TEE isolation boundary and potentially corrupting TEE control-flow data for code execution, denial of service, or system crashes. Both secure-service ecall and interrupt entry paths contain the vulnerable ordering. This issue is fixed in version 5.5.6 and is scheduled to be fixed in versions 6.0.4 and 6.1.1.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects the Espressif IoT Development Framework (ESP-IDF) versions between 5.5.5 and 5.5.6, 6.0.4, and 6.1.1. It involves a flaw in the esp_tee trap entry code where a register frame controlled by the caller is saved to the REE-supplied stack pointer before validating the pointer or switching to the trusted TEE stack. This allows a local unprivileged application to write into TEE-exclusive memory on certain ESP32 devices, breaking the isolation between the Rich Execution Environment (REE) and Trusted Execution Environment (TEE).

Detection Guidance

Detection requires checking the ESP-IDF version in use. Compare installed versions against affected ranges (5.5.5 to 5.5.6, 6.0.4, 6.1.1). Use commands like 'idf.py --version' or check project CMakeLists.txt for version. Affected devices include ESP32-C5, ESP32-C6, ESP32-C61, and ESP32-H2.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can lead to severe impacts such as unauthorized code execution, denial of service, or system crashes on affected ESP32 devices (ESP32-C5, ESP32-C6, ESP32-C61, ESP32-H2). An attacker could exploit this to corrupt TEE control-flow data, potentially gaining elevated privileges or disrupting system operations.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade ESP-IDF to fixed versions: 5.5.6 or later, 6.0.4, or 6.1.1. For ESP32-C5, ESP32-C6, ESP32-C61, and ESP32-H2 devices, apply the patch immediately. Avoid using vulnerable versions in production environments until updated.
