Executive Summary

This is a Cross-site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in Apache OFBiz 24.09 before 24.09.08. It allows an unauthenticated attacker to inject malicious JavaScript code into a web page viewed by a logged-in back-office user. The attack occurs when the user opens a specially crafted URL from within the application.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this XSS vulnerability in Apache OFBiz requires checking for unpatched versions of 24.09 before 24.09.08. Inspect server logs for suspicious viewImage URL requests containing JavaScript payloads. Monitor network traffic for unusual interactions with the Catalog image viewer endpoint.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could steal session cookies, perform actions on behalf of the user, or redirect the user to malicious websites. This could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data or account takeover if the victim has elevated privileges.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating GDPR's data protection principles or HIPAA's security requirements for protected health information. Organizations may face compliance penalties if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Apache OFBiz to version 24.09.08 or later immediately. If upgrading is not possible, restrict access to the Catalog image viewer functionality or disable it temporarily. Apply input validation filters to sanitize URLs in the viewImage parameter.
