Stored XSS in Web::Simple Perl Module

Description

Web::Simple versions before 0.036 for Perl do not escape values interpolated into double-quoted strings in HTML::Tags output. Under use HTML::Tags or use XML::Tags, a double-quoted string literal becomes a StringThing object that holds each interpolated value as a separate part. The escaping step passes such objects through, and stringify joins their interpolated parts as is. A value passed on its own, as in <p>, $value, </p>, is entity-escaped, but the same value in "Hello $value" is not. An attacker who controls a value that an application interpolates into a double-quoted string can inject script into the generated page.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects Web::Simple versions before 0.036 for Perl. When using HTML::Tags or XML::Tags, double-quoted strings with interpolated values are not properly escaped. Attackers can inject malicious scripts by controlling interpolated values in these strings.

Detection Guidance

Check if your Perl application uses Web::Simple versions before 0.036 or XML::Tags with HTML::Tags. Inspect code for double-quoted strings with interpolated variables passed to HTML::Tags or XML::Tags output functions.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to inject malicious scripts into web pages generated by the application. This could lead to cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks, potentially stealing user data or performing unauthorized actions on behalf of users.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to data breaches or unauthorized access, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's security rules for protected health information. Non-compliance may result in legal penalties and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Update Web::Simple to version 0.036 or later. If using XML::Tags, apply the patch from the provided commit to ensure proper escaping of interpolated strings in HTML output.
