Description

The WPvivid β€” Backup, Migration & Staging WordPress plugin before 0.9.137 does not verify that a submitted snapshot identifier names a snapshot it actually created before using it as a database table-name prefix, so an authenticated administrator can supply the site's table prefix, or any other string, and cause the WPvivid β€” Backup, Migration & Staging WordPress plugin before 0.9.137 to drop every matching table, including the core WordPress tables, destroying the site's database.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects the WPvivid Backup & Migration WordPress plugin versions below 0.9.137. It allows authenticated administrators to delete arbitrary database tables by submitting a snapshot identifier that isn't properly verified. The plugin fails to confirm if the provided snapshot ID matches one it created, enabling an attacker to input the site's table prefix or any other string. This can delete all matching tables, including core WordPress tables, destroying the site's database.

Detection Guidance

Check the installed version of the WPvivid Backup & Migration plugin. If it is below 0.9.137, the system is vulnerable. Log in as an administrator and inspect plugin settings for unusual snapshot identifiers or database table deletions.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability can lead to complete database destruction, including core WordPress tables. This would make the website inoperable, cause data loss, and potentially disrupt business operations. Attackers could leverage this to take control of the site or render it unusable.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to non-compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by causing data breaches or loss of sensitive information. Destroying database tables may result in unauthorized access to personal data, violating privacy regulations and potentially leading to legal penalties.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the WPvivid Backup & Migration plugin to version 0.9.137 or later immediately. Temporarily restrict administrative access to the plugin until the update is applied. Review database tables for unauthorized deletions and restore from a backup if affected.
