Executive Summary

This is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Text Typing WordPress plugin before version 2.2.2. It occurs because the plugin fails to properly sanitize and escape a block attribute before storing it. This allows users with Contributor role or higher to inject malicious scripts that are stored and later executed in the browsers of anyone viewing the affected page.

Detection Guidance

Check the installed version of the Text Typing WordPress plugin. If it is version 2.2.2 or earlier, the system is vulnerable. Use WordPress admin panel or run a command like 'wp plugin list' in the WordPress directory to verify the plugin version.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with Contributor access or higher could inject malicious scripts into pages. When other users view these pages, the scripts execute in their browsers, potentially stealing session cookies, redirecting to phishing sites, or performing actions on behalf of the user without their consent.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to user data, violating GDPR's data protection principles and HIPAA's security requirements for protected health information. It may result in data breaches, non-compliance penalties, and loss of user trust.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Text Typing plugin to version 2.2.2 or later immediately. Remove or disable the plugin if an update is not available. Restrict user roles to the minimum required permissions to reduce attack surface.
