Description

The Duplicator WordPress plugin before 5.1.0, duplicator-pro WordPress plugin before 5.1.0 does not restrict its database charset and collation rewrite to schema statements during a restore, so a value a Subscriber stores in their own profile can break out of its string literal and inject SQL into the restore's INSERT statement when an administrator restores the backup onto a server lacking one of the source's charsets or collations.

Executive Summary

The Duplicator WordPress plugin before version 5.1.0 and Duplicator Pro before version 5.1.0 are vulnerable to SQL injection. A Subscriber-level user can inject malicious SQL by storing a specially crafted value in their profile. During an administrator's restore process, if the target server lacks the original charset or collation, this injected SQL executes within the INSERT statement of the restore operation.

Detection Guidance

Check the installed versions of Duplicator and Duplicator Pro plugins. If versions are below 5.1.0, the system is vulnerable. Use commands like 'wp plugin list' in WordPress CLI or inspect plugin files for version details.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows a Subscriber+ user to execute arbitrary SQL commands on the database. An attacker could manipulate, delete, or exfiltrate sensitive data, alter site functionality, or gain elevated privileges. The impact depends on the database permissions and the attacker's goals.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating GDPR's data integrity and confidentiality requirements or HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Organizations may face compliance violations, legal penalties, and reputational damage if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Update both Duplicator and Duplicator Pro plugins to version 5.1.0 or later immediately. Remove or restrict Subscriber-level access to user profiles until updates are applied to prevent potential exploitation.
