Description

Zulip is an open-source team collaboration tool. From 8.0 until 12.2, in organizations where the Who can view all other users in the organization setting restricted guests from viewing other users, saving or editing a direct message draft did not verify that the sender could access the draft recipients. A guest could thereby gain access to otherwise restricted users' profile information without sending a message. Organizations that did not restrict guest access were unaffected. This issue is fixed in version 12.2.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability in Zulip allows a restricted guest user to save a direct message draft addressed to other users without verifying if the sender can access those recipients. The system previously created access permissions when saving drafts, letting guests bypass visibility restrictions and view profile information of users they shouldn't be able to see.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your Zulip server version is between 8.0 and 12.1. Verify if guest access is restricted and if users can save DM drafts without proper recipient access checks. Review logs for unusual draft creation activity involving unauthorized users.

Impact Analysis

If you use Zulip versions 8.0 to 12.1 with restricted guest access settings, a guest could access profile information of other users by saving drafts addressed to them. This exposes sensitive user data without requiring the guest to send an actual message.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal data, potentially violating GDPR's data protection principles or HIPAA's patient privacy requirements. Organizations handling sensitive data must ensure such access controls are properly enforced to maintain compliance.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade to Zulip server version 12.2 or later immediately. If upgrading is not possible, disable guest access or restrict DM draft functionality until patched. Review and remove any unauthorized drafts created during the vulnerable period.
