Description

The Slim Jetpack plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'g<PAGE_ID>-website (Website contact-field)' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 2.7.0.1 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. The nonce and authentication checks on form submission are only enforced for logged-in users, allowing unauthenticated visitors to store payloads via any page containing the [contact-form] shortcode.

Executive Summary

The Slim Jetpack plugin for WordPress has a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability. This flaw allows attackers to inject malicious scripts via the 'g<PAGE_ID>-website' parameter in pages using the [contact-form] shortcode. The issue arises because input is not properly sanitized and output is not escaped, enabling unauthenticated attackers to store harmful scripts that execute when users view the infected page.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress sites for the Slim Jetpack plugin versions up to 2.7.0.1. Inspect pages with the [contact-form] shortcode for malicious scripts in the 'g<PAGE_ID>-website' parameter. Review server logs for unusual POST requests to contact forms.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows attackers to steal user sessions, deface websites, or redirect visitors to malicious sites. It can also be used to trick users into revealing sensitive information. Since the payload executes when a page is viewed, any visitor to an affected site could be compromised without needing to log in.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to data breaches, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for protecting user data. If exploited, it may result in unauthorized access to personal or health information, triggering regulatory penalties, fines, or legal consequences for non-compliance with data protection standards.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Slim Jetpack plugin to the latest version. If an update is unavailable, disable the plugin temporarily. Implement input sanitization for form fields and add output escaping for dynamic content. Monitor affected pages for unauthorized script injections.
