Description

The Quttera ThreatSign – Web Malware Scanner for WordPress plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'HTTP_USER_AGENT' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 4.1.0.48 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever an administrator accesses an injected page.

Executive Summary

The Quttera ThreatSign WordPress plugin up to version 4.1.0.48 has a stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability. It occurs because the plugin fails to properly sanitize and escape user input in the HTTP_USER_AGENT parameter. Attackers can exploit this to inject malicious scripts into web pages.

Detection Guidance

Check for the Quttera ThreatSign WordPress plugin versions up to 4.1.0.48. Inspect HTTP_USER_AGENT parameters in logs for unusual scripts. Use WordPress admin panel to review injected pages or scan for unexpected JavaScript in pages.

Impact Analysis

Unauthenticated attackers can inject scripts that execute when an administrator views an affected page. This could lead to unauthorized actions, data theft, or further compromise of the WordPress site.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could expose sensitive user data, potentially violating GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (health data privacy) requirements. Organizations may face compliance penalties if user data is compromised due to this flaw.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Quttera ThreatSign plugin to the latest version beyond 4.1.0.48. Remove any unauthorized scripts from affected pages. Monitor admin access logs for suspicious activity.
