Description

Server side request forgery vulnerability exists in the DLP on-prem extensions version 11.13.1 and earlier allows the file Prefix parameter in the OpenEventEvidenceFile.do endpoint accepts arbitrary UNC paths without validation. The server-side code attempts to open the specified file path, causing Windows to resolve the hostname and initiate SMB authentication to the attacker-controlled host.

Executive Summary

This is a server-side request forgery (SSRF) vulnerability in Trellix DLP on-prem extensions version 11.13.1 and earlier. It occurs because the file Prefix parameter in the OpenEventEvidenceFile.do endpoint accepts arbitrary UNC paths without validation. The server attempts to open the specified file path, causing Windows to resolve the hostname and initiate SMB authentication to an attacker-controlled host.

Detection Guidance

Monitor network traffic for unusual SMB authentication attempts originating from the DLP on-prem extensions server. Check logs for connections to unexpected or external hosts via the OpenEventEvidenceFile.do endpoint.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to force the server to connect to arbitrary SMB shares under their control. This may lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, internal network reconnaissance, or further attacks like credential theft via NTLM hash capture.

Mitigation Strategies

Update DLP on-prem extensions to version 11.14.0 or later. Restrict network access to the OpenEventEvidenceFile.do endpoint. Implement input validation for the file Prefix parameter to block UNC paths.
