Stored XSS in Link Library WordPress Plugin

Description

The Link Library plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'link_description' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 7.10.0 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. This exploit requires the site administrator to have enabled the non-default 'Convert [] to <> in Link Description and Notes' (use_html_tags) setting; when this option is off, the bracket-to-angle-bracket conversion never runs and the payload is never reconstructed into executable HTML.

Executive Summary

The Link Library plugin for WordPress has a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in versions up to 7.10.0. It occurs due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping in the 'link_description' parameter. Attackers can inject malicious scripts into pages, which execute when users access those pages. This requires the site administrator to enable a specific non-default setting for the exploit to work.

Detection Guidance

Detection involves checking for the Link Library plugin version 7.10.0 or earlier and verifying if the 'Convert [] to <> in Link Description and Notes' setting is enabled. Inspect WordPress admin settings and plugin files for suspicious scripts in link descriptions.

Impact Analysis

Unauthenticated attackers can inject arbitrary web scripts into your WordPress site. If a user visits a page with the injected script, it may execute, potentially stealing user data, session cookies, or performing actions on behalf of the user. This could lead to unauthorized access, data breaches, or defacement of your website.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to data breaches, exposing user data. GDPR requires protecting personal data, and a breach may result in fines or legal action. HIPAA mandates safeguarding health information; a breach could violate compliance, leading to penalties or loss of trust.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the Link Library plugin to the latest version beyond 7.10.0. Disable the 'Convert [] to <> in Link Description and Notes' setting if enabled. Review all link descriptions for injected scripts and remove any suspicious content.
