Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an authentication bypass in Barracuda Email Security Gateway (ESG) versions before 9.4.0.030. It allows an unauthenticated remote attacker to bypass authentication and restore a specially crafted backup archive. This archive modifies the appliance's global configuration without authorization.

Detection Guidance

Check Barracuda ESG appliance logs for unusual configuration import or restore operations. Monitor network traffic for unauthorized access attempts to the configuration-import function. Verify appliance version against 9.4.0.030 or later to confirm vulnerability status.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to gain unauthorized access to the Barracuda ESG appliance. This may lead to complete control over email security settings, potential data breaches, or disruption of email services. The high CVSS score of 9.3 indicates severe impact.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or data breaches, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's security rules. Organizations using affected Barracuda ESG versions may face compliance violations, legal penalties, and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Barracuda ESG to version 9.4.0.030 or later immediately. Disable remote configuration import/restore functions if not required. Restrict network access to the appliance management interface. Review and audit global configuration changes for unauthorized modifications.
