Time-Based SQL Injection in Amelia Pro WordPress Plugin

Description

The Booking for Appointments and Events Calendar – Amelia Pro plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to time-based SQL Injection via the 'tag[] (array KEYS)' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 9.9.1 due to insufficient escaping on the user supplied parameter and lack of sufficient preparation on the existing SQL query. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to append additional SQL queries into already existing queries that can be used to extract sensitive information from the database. WordPress's wp_magic_quotes escapes array values but not array keys, meaning attacker-controlled tag[] array keys reach EventRepository::getFilteredIds() completely unescaped and can be crafted to defeat the plugin's Statement::execute placeholder binder via overlapping strtr() substitution keys.

CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a time-based SQL Injection in the Amelia Pro WordPress plugin affecting versions up to 9.9.1. It occurs due to insufficient escaping of the 'tag[]' parameter array keys, allowing unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious SQL queries. The flaw bypasses WordPress's wp_magic_quotes protection because it only escapes array values, not keys.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability can be detected by checking if the Amelia Pro plugin version is up to date. Use WordPress admin panel to verify the plugin version or run SQL queries to test for time-based SQL injection via the 'tag[]' parameter. Example command: curl -s -X POST 'http://example.com/wp-admin/admin-ajax.php' -d 'action=amelia_get_events&tag[]=(SELECT * FROM (SELECT(SLEEP(5)))a)' | grep -i 'timeout'

Inspect server logs for unusual SQL query patterns or delays. Enable WordPress debugging to log database queries for review.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to extract sensitive data from the database, such as user credentials, personal information, or booking details. Since it requires no authentication, any WordPress site using the vulnerable plugin version is at risk of unauthorized data access or manipulation.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal data, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Organizations may face legal penalties, reputational damage, and loss of customer trust if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the Amelia Pro plugin to the latest version (9.9.2 or later) to patch the SQL injection flaw. Disable the plugin temporarily if an update is not immediately available.

Review and restrict database user permissions to limit potential damage from SQL injection. Monitor network traffic for suspicious activity targeting the plugin.
