Publication date: 2026-11-01

Last updated on: 2026-11-01

Assigner: Gitea Limited

Description

The repositories, stars and watching tabs of user profiles and the repository list of organization home pages included private repositories for every signed-in request without checking whether the request used a personal access token restricted to public resources (`public-only`). A holder of such a token could list the private repositories visible to the token's owner, and that user's stars and watches of private repositories. The API and the profile activity tab already applied the restriction. The impact is disclosure of repository names and metadata, not of repository content.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability in Gitea allows personal access tokens restricted to public resources to view private repositories through certain web profile and organization tabs. While the API and profile activity tab correctly block access, the affected web routes do not enforce the public-only token restriction, leading to an authorization inconsistency.

Detection Guidance

Check Gitea version for exposure. Run 'curl -s http://<gitea-server>/api/v1/version | grep version' to verify if it is below 28.3.0. Inspect web profile and organization tabs for private repository listings when using public-only tokens.

Impact Analysis

A holder of a public-only token could list private repositories visible to the token's owner, including stars and watches of private repositories. This results in disclosure of repository names and metadata, not repository content.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could potentially affect compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by exposing private repository names and metadata without proper authorization. Unauthorized access to private data may violate confidentiality requirements under these regulations, depending on the nature of the repositories.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Gitea to version 28.3.0 or later immediately. Review and revoke any public-only tokens that may have been misused. Monitor repository access logs for unusual activity.
