Description

The JS Help Desk – AI-Powered Support & Ticketing System plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored DOM-Based Cross-Site Scripting via the 'jsticket_message' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 5.0.2 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. The payload fires specifically when an administrator or agent opens the affected ticket and the page initializes VenoBox, which reads the browser-decoded data-title attribute and passes it to jQuery .html(), making routine ticket review the trigger condition.

Executive Summary

This is a Stored DOM-Based Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the JS Help Desk WordPress plugin. It allows authenticated attackers with subscriber-level access or higher to inject malicious scripts via the 'jsticket_message' parameter due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. The injected scripts execute when an administrator or agent opens the affected ticket and the page initializes VenoBox, which processes the malicious data.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress plugin files for obfuscated or corrupted code in changelog.txt and includes/activation.php. Look for unusual characters or structures in these files that may indicate tampering or malicious payloads.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could steal sensitive information like session cookies or login credentials, perform actions on behalf of users, or deface the website. It may also lead to further compromise of the WordPress site or hosting environment if combined with other vulnerabilities.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to user data, violating GDPR's data protection principles and HIPAA's security requirements for protected health information. Organizations may face fines or penalties for failing to protect user data adequately.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the JS Help Desk plugin to version 5.0.3 or later. Remove any suspicious or obfuscated code found in the plugin files. Monitor for unauthorized access or unusual activity in the plugin's files and database.
