Description

The Falang multilanguage for WordPress plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'falang_term[<taxonomy>][<locale>][<field>] (via order[] driving wp_update_term)' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 1.4.6 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. The exploit is made reliable because the required 'falang' nonce is disclosed to any logged-in user through the equally unprotected wp_ajax_falang_menu_translation handler, requiring no elevated access to obtain.

Executive Summary

The Falang multilanguage plugin for WordPress has a stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability. It allows authenticated attackers with subscriber-level access or higher to inject malicious scripts into web pages. The issue occurs due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping in the 'falang_term' parameter. Attackers can exploit this by manipulating the 'order[]' parameter during term updates.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect WordPress sites using the Falang plugin for versions up to 1.4.6. Check for suspicious scripts in pages or posts, particularly those injected via the falang_term parameter. Review server logs for unusual wp_update_term activity or unauthorized nonce exposure through wp_ajax_falang_menu_translation.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows attackers to inject malicious scripts into your WordPress site. These scripts can steal user data, hijack sessions, or deface pages. Since the exploit requires only subscriber-level access, it lowers the barrier for attacks. Users visiting infected pages may have their sessions compromised or be redirected to malicious sites.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to data breaches, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection. If user data is stolen via the injected scripts, organizations may face fines and legal penalties. Non-compliance risks include reputational damage and loss of trust. Immediate patching is recommended to maintain regulatory compliance.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the Falang plugin to the latest version beyond 1.4.6. Remove any unauthorized scripts from posts or pages. Restrict subscriber-level access to prevent exploitation. Monitor for signs of compromise and review user roles for unnecessary permissions.
