Description

The LearnPress – Course Review plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored DOM-Based Cross-Site Scripting via the 'review_title (inside `data.args.review_title`)' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 4.2.2 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. The injected payload only executes after an administrator approves the submitted review, though sites with comment_previously_approved auto-approval configured may bypass manual moderation.

Executive Summary

This is a Stored DOM-Based Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the LearnPress – Course Review WordPress plugin. It exists due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping in the 'review_title' parameter. Authenticated attackers with subscriber-level access or higher can inject malicious scripts into pages. The scripts execute when users access the infected page, particularly after an administrator approves the review.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect WordPress sites using the LearnPress – Course Review plugin versions up to 4.2.2. Check for stored XSS payloads in review_title parameters. Review admin-approved reviews for suspicious scripts. Use Wordfence or similar security plugins to scan for malicious code in plugin files and database entries.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could steal user sessions, redirect users to malicious sites, or perform actions on their behalf. If comment_previously_approved is enabled, attacks may bypass moderation entirely. This could lead to unauthorized access, data theft, or defacement of the website.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating GDPR's integrity and confidentiality principles. For HIPAA, it may expose protected health information, risking compliance with security requirements. Both standards mandate protecting against unauthorized access and ensuring data integrity.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the LearnPress – Course Review plugin to the latest version beyond 4.2.2 to patch the vulnerability. Disable subscriber-level access to review submissions if possible or implement strict moderation for reviews before approval.
