Description

The Image Hover Effects Ultimate ( Image Gallery, Effects, Lightbox, Comparison & Magnifier ) plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'rawdata.oxi_image_comparison_before_text' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 9.12.2 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. This is only exploitable when an administrator has configured the plugin's "Who can edit" setting to Subscriber, which allows any authenticated user to overwrite existing styles β€” including those created by administrators β€” via a missing ownership check on the target style ID.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) flaw in the Image Hover Effects Ultimate WordPress plugin. It allows authenticated attackers with subscriber-level access or higher to inject malicious scripts via the 'rawdata.oxi_image_comparison_before_text' parameter. The issue arises due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect WordPress sites using the Image Hover Effects Ultimate plugin for unauthorized script injections in the 'rawdata.oxi_image_comparison_before_text' parameter. Check plugin versions up to 9.12.2 and review user roles with subscriber-level access or higher for suspicious activity.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could inject scripts that execute when users access infected pages. This could lead to theft of cookies, session tokens, or other sensitive data. The impact depends on user privileges and plugin configuration, especially if the 'Who can edit' setting allows subscribers to modify styles.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating GDPR's data protection principles or HIPAA's security requirements. Organizations using this plugin may face compliance risks if user data is compromised through the injected scripts.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the Image Hover Effects Ultimate plugin to the latest version beyond 9.12.2. Disable the plugin if not essential. Restrict 'Who can edit' settings to prevent subscriber-level access from modifying styles. Review and remove any injected scripts in plugin configurations.
