Description

The Optimole – Optimize Images | Convert WebP & AVIF | CDN & Lazy Load | Image Optimization plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'comment' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 4.2.17 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. The exploit requires the plugin to be in its normal connected state (cdn_key and cdn_secret configured) with the image replacer enabled, which is the default post-setup configuration; the stored payload bypasses all WordPress comment sanitization filters because it contains no HTML metacharacters at storage time β€” the characters are produced only by Optimole's own decoder at render time.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) flaw in the Optimole WordPress plugin up to version 4.2.17. It allows unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious scripts via the 'comment' parameter due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. The injected scripts execute when users access affected pages.

Detection Guidance

Check if the Optimole plugin is installed and active on your WordPress site. Look for unusual comments or scripts in pages where the plugin renders images. Review server logs for suspicious activity related to the plugin's image handling.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could steal user sessions, redirect to malicious sites, or perform actions on behalf of users. The exploit requires the plugin to be active with default settings (CDN configured and image replacer enabled).

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could potentially violate compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by allowing unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious scripts into web pages. If exploited, it may lead to unauthorized data access or manipulation, compromising user privacy and security.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Optimole plugin to the latest version if available. Disable the plugin temporarily if no update is available. Review and sanitize user comments manually. Consider using a Web Application Firewall to block malicious payloads.
