Description

Improper neutralization of special elements used in a template engine in the publishing component of Amazon Virtual Engineering Workbench (VEW) could allow a remote authenticated third party to run arbitrary code with the permissions of the publishing Lambda's IAM role. This could allow access to data and resources across all tenant projects. The code is reachable through a crafted CloudFormation template body containing template engine directives submitted through the product versioning API. To remediate this issue, users should redeploy from the latest version of awslabs/virtual-engineering-workbench.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability involves improper neutralization of special elements in a template engine within Amazon Virtual Engineering Workbench (VEW). A remote authenticated third party could exploit this to run arbitrary code with the permissions of the publishing Lambda's IAM role, potentially accessing data and resources across all tenant projects.

Detection Guidance

Detection requires checking for crafted CloudFormation templates submitted through the product versioning API that contain template engine directives. Monitor Lambda execution logs for unusual activity and inspect CloudFormation template bodies for suspicious patterns.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code with elevated permissions, leading to unauthorized access to sensitive data and resources across multiple tenant projects. It may result in data breaches, loss of confidentiality, and potential disruption of services.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal or sensitive data, violating GDPR and HIPAA compliance requirements. It may result in data breaches, leading to legal penalties, reputational damage, and loss of trust.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately redeploy from the latest version of awslabs/virtual-engineering-workbench to remediate the issue. Ensure no untrusted CloudFormation templates are processed until the update is applied.
