Description

The LifterLMS – WP LMS for eLearning, Online Courses, & Quizzes plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'answer[]' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 10.3.2 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. Exploitation requires the attacker to be enrolled as a student in a course containing a Content-type quiz question; the injected payload executes in the administrator's browser session during the normal grading workflow when 'Start a Review' is clicked on the affected attempt.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) flaw in the LifterLMS WordPress plugin. It exists due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping in the 'answer[]' parameter. This allows authenticated attackers with subscriber-level access or higher to inject malicious scripts into pages. The scripts execute when an administrator reviews quiz attempts, specifically when 'Start a Review' is clicked.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability requires checking WordPress sites using the LifterLMS plugin versions up to 10.3.2. Inspect quiz questions for stored XSS payloads in the 'answer[]' parameter. Review user roles and course enrollments for unauthorized subscribers with access to inject scripts.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could steal sensitive information like session cookies or login credentials by tricking administrators into viewing infected pages. This could lead to unauthorized account access, data breaches, or further compromise of the WordPress site. The attack requires the attacker to be enrolled as a student in a course with a quiz question.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or exfiltration, violating GDPR's data protection requirements or HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Organizations may face compliance violations, legal penalties, or reputational damage if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the LifterLMS plugin to the latest version beyond 10.3.2 immediately. Remove or restrict subscriber-level access to course enrollments. Monitor admin dashboards for unexpected scripts in quiz content or grading workflows.
