Description

The wpForo Forum plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to time-based SQL Injection via the 'href[locale]' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 3.2.2 due to insufficient escaping on the user supplied parameter and lack of sufficient preparation on the existing SQL query. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to append additional SQL queries into already existing queries that can be used to extract sensitive information from the database. The nonce required for exploitation is publicly issued to unauthenticated visitors on any forum page via the wpforo.nonces JavaScript object, meaning no account or prior interaction beyond a page load is required to obtain it.

CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

This is a time-based SQL Injection vulnerability in the wpForo Forum plugin for WordPress affecting versions up to 3.2.2. It occurs due to insufficient escaping of the 'href[locale]' parameter and lack of proper SQL query preparation. Unauthenticated attackers can inject malicious SQL queries to extract sensitive database information.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability can be detected by checking for unusual SQL query patterns or errors in WordPress logs. Inspect the wpForo plugin files for the 'href[locale]' parameter usage. Monitor database access logs for unexpected queries or data extraction attempts.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to steal sensitive data from your WordPress database, such as user credentials, personal information, or other confidential data. Since no authentication is required, any visitor to your site could potentially launch this attack.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal data, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection. Organizations may face legal penalties, reputational damage, and loss of compliance certifications if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the wpForo Forum plugin to the latest version beyond 3.2.2. If an update is unavailable, disable the plugin temporarily. Review database access logs for signs of exploitation and consider implementing a web application firewall to block SQL injection attempts.
