Description

The Pie Register – User Registration, Profiles & Content Restriction plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'first_name' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 3.8.4.16 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. This is exploitable when public registration is enabled and the registration form includes a Profile Picture field; the attacker registers via the publicly accessible form (nonce is emitted to unauthenticated visitors) to store the payload, then logs in as the newly created Subscriber to post a comment that triggers delivery to all page visitors.

Executive Summary

This is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Pie Register WordPress plugin up to version 3.8.4.16. It allows unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious scripts via the 'first_name' parameter due to poor input sanitization. The payload executes when users visit an infected page. Exploitation requires public registration enabled and a Profile Picture field in the form.

Detection Guidance

Check for the presence of the Pie Register plugin version 3.8.4.16 or lower. Inspect WordPress registration forms for the 'first_name' parameter and verify if public registration is enabled. Look for unexpected scripts in user-submitted content or profile fields.

Impact Analysis

Attackers can steal user sessions, redirect to malicious sites, or deface pages. Visitors to compromised pages may have their data exposed or devices infected. The vulnerability enables widespread attacks since it targets public registration forms and affects all page visitors.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to data breaches, violating GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (health data privacy). It risks unauthorized access to user data, triggering compliance violations, fines, and reputational damage for organizations handling sensitive information.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Pie Register plugin to the latest version beyond 3.8.4.16. Disable public registration if not required. Implement input sanitization for the 'first_name' parameter and ensure output escaping is applied. Monitor for suspicious user registrations or injected scripts.
