Description

The Flying Images: Optimize and Lazy Load Images for Faster Page Speed plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'comment' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 2.4.15 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. A first-time commenter's submission requires a single administrator approval under the default comment_previously_approved setting; however, once approved, all subsequent comments from the same name and email pair bypass moderation, and the injected script executes for every visitor β€” including administrators viewing the post from the front end.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) flaw in the Flying Images WordPress plugin. It allows unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious scripts via the 'comment' parameter due to poor input sanitization and output escaping. Once a comment is approved by an admin, future comments from the same user bypass moderation, executing the script for every visitor, including administrators.

Detection Guidance

Check for the plugin 'Flying Images: Optimize and Lazy Load Images for Faster Page Speed' version 2.4.15 or lower. Inspect WordPress comment forms for unusual script injections in the 'comment' parameter. Review admin-approved comments for unexpected scripts in page content.

Impact Analysis

Attackers could steal sensitive user data like cookies or session tokens, deface websites, or redirect visitors to malicious sites. Administrators viewing infected pages risk further compromise. The impact includes potential data breaches, loss of trust, and unauthorized access to WordPress sites using the vulnerable plugin.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to non-compliance with GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (health data privacy) by enabling unauthorized access to personal or health information. Organizations may face fines or penalties for failing to protect user data, especially if the XSS attack results in data exfiltration or unauthorized modifications.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the plugin to the latest version if available. Disable the plugin temporarily if no update exists. Review and remove suspicious comments. Implement stricter comment moderation settings. Monitor site traffic for unexpected scripts.
