Description

The Greenshift – animation and page builder blocks plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored DOM-Based Cross-Site Scripting via the 'url (comment_author_url)' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 13.2.2 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. Exploitation requires the affected page to be configured with a GreenShift Interaction Layer attach-attribute action that copies a comment-author anchor's href into a Counter block's data-prefix or data-postfix attribute; given that configuration, the payload executes for every visitor who loads the Counter into the viewport once the comment is published.

Executive Summary

This is a Stored DOM-Based Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Greenshift WordPress plugin. It allows unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious scripts via the 'url (comment_author_url)' parameter due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. The injected scripts execute when users view pages with specific configurations, such as a GreenShift Interaction Layer action copying comment-author links into Counter blocks.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability can be detected by checking if the Greenshift plugin is installed and its version is up to 13.2.2. Inspect WordPress comments for malicious scripts in the 'url (comment_author_url)' parameter. Use security plugins like Wordfence to scan for DOM-based XSS patterns.

Impact Analysis

Attackers could steal user sessions, redirect visitors to malicious sites, or perform actions on their behalf. Visitors to infected pages may have their data compromised or be exposed to further attacks. The vulnerability requires specific plugin configurations to exploit but poses risks to site visitors and administrators.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to data breaches, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for protecting user data. If exploited, it may result in unauthorized access to personal or sensitive information, triggering compliance violations, legal penalties, and reputational damage for organizations.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the Greenshift plugin to the latest version beyond 13.2.2. Disable the plugin if updates are unavailable. Review and sanitize user comments, especially URLs. Implement a web application firewall to block XSS attempts.
