SQL Injection in AWS SDK for pandas via Apache Iceberg

Description

Improper neutralization of quoting syntax in SQL identifier construction in the Apache Iceberg write component in AWS SDK for pandas (also published as awswrangler) 3.5.2 through 3.17.0 might allow an authenticated remote user with permission to modify AWS Glue Data Catalog metadata to read any table that a separate, more privileged principal can access and write to the table that principal is updating via a crafted column name. To remediate this issue, users should upgrade to version 3.17.1 or later.

CWE ID Description
CWE-149 Quotes injected into a product can be used to compromise a system. As data are parsed, an injected/absent/duplicate/malformed use of quotes may cause the process to take unexpected actions.
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

CVE-2026-119301 is a SQL injection vulnerability in the AWS SDK for pandas (awswrangler) library. It occurs due to improper neutralization of quoting syntax in Apache Iceberg SQL identifier generation. An authenticated user with write access to AWS Glue Data Catalog metadata could exploit this to read tables accessible to more privileged users or write to tables being updated by those users via a crafted column name.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check the version of AWS SDK for pandas (awswrangler) installed in your environment. Run: pip show awswrangler or pip list | grep awswrangler. If the version is between 3.5.2 and 3.17.0, the system is vulnerable.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows an attacker to read sensitive data from tables they should not access and modify data in tables being processed by more privileged users. It requires write permissions to AWS Glue Data Catalog metadata but could lead to unauthorized data exposure or corruption.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating compliance requirements for data protection such as GDPR and HIPAA. It may result in data breaches, unauthorized modifications, and failure to maintain data integrity and confidentiality.

Mitigation Strategies
  • Upgrade AWS SDK for pandas (awswrangler) to version 3.17.1 or later to patch the vulnerability.
  • Restrict AWS Glue Data Catalog metadata modification permissions, particularly glue:UpdateTable, until upgrading.
  • Avoid using the to_iceberg() function with principals that have excessive privileges as a temporary measure.
