Executive Summary

This is an improper input validation vulnerability in Apache Oozie, a retired project. An authenticated user can reconfigure another tenant's workflow job and change its ownership, bypassing access control lists.

Detection Guidance

Since Apache Oozie is retired and no longer supported, detection relies on monitoring for unauthorized workflow reconfigurations or ownership changes. Check Oozie logs for suspicious activity such as users modifying jobs they do not own. Review access logs for unusual authentication patterns or repeated failed login attempts.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with access could alter workflow jobs of other users, potentially leading to unauthorized actions or data manipulation. Since no fix is available, the risk remains until migration or access restrictions are implemented.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could potentially impact compliance with standards like GDPR or HIPAA by allowing unauthorized users to modify workflow jobs and ownership, which may lead to data integrity issues or unauthorized access to sensitive data. However, since Apache Oozie is retired and no fixes are available, mitigating risks through access restrictions is critical for compliance.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately restrict access to the Apache Oozie instance to trusted users only. Disable or decommission the Oozie service if possible. Migrate to an alternative workflow management system as the project is no longer supported and no fixes will be provided.
