MongoDB Database Tools Path Traversal via Symlink

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-119673, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-11-03

Last updated on: 2026-11-03

Assigner: MongoDB, Inc.

Description

MongoDB Database Tools mongofiles does not resolve existing parent-directory symlinks when validating output paths for get_regex. An unauthorized user who can both upload a GridFS file and place a symlink in the operator's download working directory can cause a later retrieval to create a file containing unauthorized user-controlled data outside that directory, using the operator process's filesystem permissions. The issue can occur with default traversal and overwrite settings. Exploitation requires an operator to retrieve matching files from the affected working directory; the demonstrated default behavior creates a new file rather than overwriting an existing file. This issue affects MongoDB Database Tools versions 100.2.0 through versions before 100.20.1.

Executive Summary

MongoDB Database Tools mongofiles fails to resolve parent-directory symlinks when validating output paths for get_regex. This allows an unauthorized user who can upload a GridFS file and place a symlink in the operator's download directory to create files outside that directory using the operator's filesystem permissions. Exploitation requires the operator to retrieve matching files from the affected directory.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could write unauthorized files to locations outside the intended download directory, potentially leading to data corruption, privilege escalation, or unauthorized access to sensitive system files. This could compromise the integrity and confidentiality of the system.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating GDPR's integrity and confidentiality principles or HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Non-compliance risks include legal penalties and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade MongoDB Database Tools to version 100.20.1 or later to address the symlink resolution issue in mongofiles.
