MongoDB Database Tools mongorestore Privilege Escalation via Collection Name

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-119675, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-11-03

Last updated on: 2026-11-03

Assigner: MongoDB, Inc.

Description

MongoDB Database Tools mongorestore inconsistently handles the system.buckets. prefix when validating collection names in an untrusted dump. A specially crafted collection name can bypass special-collection guards and operator namespace filters, causing a restore to create an unauthorized user-chosen database account, including an account with the root role. Exploitation requires an operator to restore unauthorized user-controlled data using credentials with sufficient user-management privileges on the destination deployment. Excluding the admin namespace alone does not prevent this behavior. This issue affects MongoDB Database Tools versions 100.4.0 through versions before 100.20.1.

Executive Summary

MongoDB Database Tools mongorestore has a flaw where it inconsistently handles the system.buckets. prefix during collection name validation in untrusted dumps. This allows a specially crafted collection name to bypass security checks, potentially creating unauthorized database accounts with elevated privileges like root. The issue affects versions 100.4.0 through before 100.20.1.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this by providing malicious dump data to an operator with sufficient privileges. If restored, this could create unauthorized accounts with high privileges, leading to unauthorized access, data theft, or system compromise. The attacker needs to craft a specific collection name to trigger the flaw.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or data breaches, violating confidentiality requirements in GDPR and HIPAA. It may result in unauthorized data exposure, non-compliance with access controls, and potential legal or regulatory penalties due to compromised data integrity and security.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade MongoDB Database Tools to version 100.20.1 or later to address the collection name validation issue in mongorestore.
