Description

The pppoe_wrapper vendor daemon from the Amlogic Android SDK, as shipped on Nexbox A95X (Amlogic S905/S905X) TV boxes, contains a command injection vulnerability that allows local attackers to execute arbitrary commands as root by sending crafted messages to a world-writable AF_UNIX datagram socket at /dev/socket/pppoe_wrapper. Attackers can send a message beginning with 'pppd pty' followed by shell metacharacters and arbitrary commands, which are passed unfiltered to system(3) and executed by /system/bin/sh -c as root, resulting in full privilege escalation.

Executive Summary

This is a command injection vulnerability in the pppoe_wrapper vendor daemon from the Amlogic Android SDK, found on Nexbox A95X TV boxes. Attackers can send crafted messages to a world-writable AF_UNIX socket at /dev/socket/pppoe_wrapper. By including shell metacharacters after 'pppd pty', they can execute arbitrary commands as root via system(3) without proper sanitization.

Detection Guidance

Check if the vulnerable socket exists by running: ls -l /dev/socket/pppoe_wrapper. If it exists and has world-writable permissions (mode 777), the system is likely vulnerable. Monitor for unexpected root-level processes spawned from /system/bin/sh -c.

Impact Analysis

A local attacker could gain root access on affected devices, allowing full control over the system. This could lead to data theft, malware installation, or unauthorized modifications. Physical access is not required as the vulnerable socket is world-writable.

Mitigation Strategies

Remove write permissions from the socket: chmod 600 /dev/socket/pppoe_wrapper. Disable the pppoe_wrapper daemon if not required. Restrict local user access to prevent command injection via the socket.
