Description

The VobSub subtitle decoder libsub_vob (part of the Amlogic DroidLogic SubTitleService), as shipped on Nexbox A95X (Amlogic S905X) TV boxes, contains an infinite loop vulnerability in get_vob_spu() that allows unauthenticated network attackers or local users loading malicious files to trigger an unreachable loop exit condition via mismatched length fields. Attackers can send crafted AMLU data blocks over the unauthenticated tcp/10100 listener or via a malicious VobSub (.sub) file to cause the subtitle decode thread to spin at 100% CPU indefinitely, resulting in denial of service.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an infinite loop flaw in the VobSub subtitle decoder libsub_vob, part of the Amlogic DroidLogic SubTitleService. It occurs in the get_vob_spu() function due to mismatched length fields in AMLU data blocks or VobSub files. Attackers can exploit this by sending crafted data over an unauthenticated tcp/10100 listener or loading malicious subtitle files, causing the subtitle decode thread to consume 100% CPU indefinitely and trigger a denial of service.

Detection Guidance

Monitor for processes consuming 100% CPU indefinitely, particularly the subtitle decode thread. Check for network traffic on tcp/10100 using tools like netstat or ss. Inspect loaded VobSub files for mismatched length fields.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can impact you by causing your device to become unresponsive or slow down significantly due to the infinite loop consuming all CPU resources. If you use an affected device like the Nexbox A95X or an Amlogic Android SDK-based system, an attacker could exploit this remotely or locally to disrupt normal operations, leading to denial of service.

Mitigation Strategies

Block tcp/10100 at the firewall. Disable or update the Amlogic DroidLogic SubTitleService. Avoid loading untrusted VobSub files. Monitor CPU usage for abnormal spikes.
