Description

The VobSub subtitle decoder libsub_vob (part of the Amlogic DroidLogic SubTitleService), as shipped on Nexbox A95X (Amlogic S905X) TV boxes, contains an out-of-bounds write vulnerability in vob_fill_pixel() that allows remote attackers to corrupt stack memory by sending a crafted SET_CONTR command with an attacker-controlled alpha value that drives an unbounded array index (change_data) past the end of the fixed four-element PixelDatas array. Attackers can exploit this by sending malicious VobSub data over the unauthenticated tcp/10100 socket or via a malicious .sub file to zero out adjacent stack bytes, resulting in silent stack corruption or process crash.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an out-of-bounds write flaw in the VobSub subtitle decoder libsub_vob, part of the Amlogic DroidLogic SubTitleService. It exists in the vob_fill_pixel() function where an attacker can send a crafted SET_CONTR command with a controlled alpha value. This causes an unbounded array index to exceed the fixed four-element PixelDatas array, corrupting stack memory on Nexbox A95X TV boxes.

Detection Guidance

Detect this vulnerability by monitoring tcp/10100 traffic for malformed VobSub data or SET_CONTR commands with attacker-controlled alpha values. Inspect .sub files for excessive array index manipulation. Check for stack corruption or process crashes in subtitle decoding services.

Impact Analysis

An attacker can exploit this to corrupt stack memory or crash the process by sending malicious VobSub data via an unauthenticated tcp/10100 socket or a malicious .sub file. This may lead to silent data corruption or denial of service on affected devices.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately block unauthenticated tcp/10100 traffic on affected Nexbox A95X devices. Disable or update the libsub_vob component in Amlogic DroidLogic SubTitleService. Avoid opening untrusted .sub files. Apply patches from Amlogic if available.
