Description

Cendio ThinLinc contains an improper authentication vulnerability in its browser-based web client (tlwebaccess) that allows an authenticated attacker to impersonate any other user, including root, by exploiting flaws in multi-step authentication flows such as one-time passwords, login banners, or expired password prompts. Attackers can leverage this authentication bypass during the multi-step login process to gain unauthorized access to other user accounts, including administrative privileges, in versions from 4.1.0 through 4.20.0.

Executive Summary

CVE-2026-119744 is an improper authentication vulnerability in Cendio ThinLinc's browser-based web client (tlwebaccess). It allows an authenticated attacker to impersonate any user, including root, by exploiting flaws in multi-step authentication flows such as one-time passwords, login banners, or expired password prompts. The issue affects versions 4.1.0 through 4.20.0.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, monitor ThinLinc Web Access logs for unusual privilege escalations or impersonation attempts. Check for multiple failed login attempts followed by successful logins from the same IP. Verify if any user accounts, including root, were accessed without proper authentication steps. Disable the Web Access service temporarily if suspicious activity is detected.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could gain unauthorized access to other user accounts, including administrative privileges. This could lead to data theft, system compromise, or further lateral movement within a network. The vulnerability requires an attacker to already have authenticated access but enables them to escalate privileges.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating confidentiality requirements in GDPR and HIPAA. Organizations using affected ThinLinc versions may face compliance violations, potential fines, and reputational damage due to insufficient authentication controls.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately upgrade ThinLinc to versions 4.15.1 through 4.20.1 if using affected versions. If upgrading is not possible, disable the ThinLinc Web Access service using the command: sudo systemctl disable --now tlwebaccess.service. Restrict access to ThinLinc infrastructure and monitor logs for unusual activity. Prepare for the update by identifying all ThinLinc instances and scheduling a maintenance window.
