Description

The GetPaid plugin for WordPress before 2.8.63 contains an incorrect authorization vulnerability where the check_post_permissions() method in includes/api/class-getpaid-rest-posts-controller.php maps REST operations to generic WordPress post capabilities instead of enforcing the plugin's manage_invoicing permission. Authenticated users with lower-privileged roles such as Editor or Author can exploit this flaw to list other users' invoices, mark pending invoices as paid without recording payment transactions, or create published items and new invoices through the REST API.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an incorrect authorization flaw in the GetPaid WordPress plugin before version 2.8.63. The check_post_permissions() method incorrectly uses generic WordPress post capabilities instead of the plugin's specific manage_invoicing permission. This allows lower-privileged users like Editors or Authors to perform unauthorized actions via the REST API.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check the installed version of the GetPaid plugin. If it is below 2.8.63, the system is vulnerable. Use WordPress admin panel or run a command like 'wp plugin list' in the WordPress directory to verify the plugin version.

Impact Analysis

Authenticated users with Editor or Author roles could list other users' invoices, mark pending invoices as paid without recording transactions, or create published items and new invoices through the REST API. This could lead to financial discrepancies, data exposure, or unauthorized content creation.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive invoice data, potentially violating GDPR (data privacy) or HIPAA (healthcare data protection) by exposing personal or financial information without proper authorization.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the GetPaid plugin to version 2.8.63 or later. If updating is not possible, consider disabling the plugin temporarily until a patch is applied. Review user roles and permissions to ensure only authorized users have access to invoicing functions.
