psqlODBC Stack Buffer Overflow via ctid Column

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-120067, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-11-02

Last updated on: 2026-11-02

Assigner: PostgreSQL

Description

For updatable cursors, which are enabled by default, psqlODBC adds hidden ctid and, for tables with OIDs, oid columns to the query. It copies each value into a 32-byte stack buffer using the length the server sent, without checking it against the buffer size, so a value of 32 bytes or more writes past the buffer. A server not trusted under current SSL settings can send such a value. So can any database user who can create a view with its own column named ctid that the application reads with an updatable cursor. Builds with _FORTIFY_SOURCE abort; other builds overwrite adjacent stack memory. Versions before psqlODBC 18.00.0006 are affected.

CWE ID Description
CWE-787 The product writes data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer.
CWE-121 A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function).

Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects psqlODBC, a PostgreSQL ODBC driver. When using updatable cursors, psqlODBC adds hidden columns like ctid and oid to queries without validating their length. A malicious server or database user can send a value of 32 bytes or more, causing a stack buffer overflow. This can lead to crashes or arbitrary code execution depending on the build configuration.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability can be detected by checking the version of psqlODBC installed on your system. If the version is before 18.00.0006, the system is vulnerable. Run the command 'psqlodbc --version' to check the installed version.

Impact Analysis

If you use psqlODBC with updatable cursors against an untrusted PostgreSQL server or a server where an attacker can create views with specific column names, your application may crash or be compromised. Systems without _FORTIFY_SOURCE are more vulnerable to memory corruption.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately upgrade psqlODBC to version 18.00.0006 or later to address the stack buffer overflow issue. Ensure SSL settings are properly configured to prevent untrusted servers from sending malicious data.
