Description

The GeoDirectory – WP Business Directory Plugin and Classified Listings Directory plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'post_content' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 2.8.200 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. The nested shortcode payload ([gd_dynamic_conten[gd_tags]t ...]) defeats the plugin's geodir_strip_shortcodes() guard because WordPress's strip_shortcodes() performs only a single pass over registered tags, and HTML-entity-encoded attributes in the resulting shortcode survive wp_kses_post() because kses inspects HTML tags rather than shortcode attribute values.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) flaw in the GeoDirectory WordPress plugin. It allows unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious scripts via the 'post_content' parameter due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. The injected scripts execute when users access affected pages.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect WordPress sites using the GeoDirectory plugin for suspicious stored XSS payloads in the 'post_content' parameter. Check for encoded shortcodes like [gd_dynamic_conten[gd_tags]t ...] in page content. Use WordPress admin tools or database queries to search for unusual script tags or obfuscated code in posts.

Impact Analysis

Attackers could steal user sessions, deface websites, or redirect visitors to malicious sites. Since the payload is stored, it affects all users accessing the compromised pages. The vulnerability also bypasses the plugin's shortcode guard, making it harder to detect.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's security rules for protected health information. Organizations may face compliance penalties if user data is compromised through this flaw.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the GeoDirectory WordPress plugin to the latest version beyond 2.8.200 to patch the stored XSS vulnerability. Disable or restrict access to the plugin if an update is not immediately available. Monitor for suspicious activity or unauthorized changes in WordPress pages.
