CWE ID Description
CWE-119 The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it reads from or writes to a memory location outside the buffer's intended boundary. This may result in read or write operations on unexpected memory locations that could be linked to other variables, data structures, or internal program data.

Executive Summary

This is a local privilege escalation vulnerability in Horizon DataSys Reboot Restore Standard up to version 13.2. It exists in the shield.sys kernel driver where manipulation of the sub_23908 function leads to memory corruption. An attacker with local access can exploit this to corrupt memory and gain elevated privileges.

Detection Guidance

Since this vulnerability involves a local privilege escalation via a vulnerable driver (shield.sys), detection requires checking for unusual driver activity or unauthorized memory modifications. Monitor for unexpected system process token changes or kernel memory writes. Use tools like Process Explorer or WinDbg to inspect loaded drivers and kernel memory. The exploit involves manipulating the EPROCESS structure, so look for anomalies in process tokens or privilege levels.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with local access to a vulnerable system could exploit this to gain SYSTEM-level privileges. This allows them to execute arbitrary code, install malware, steal data, or take full control of the affected machine. The exploit is publicly available, increasing the risk of real-world attacks.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update Horizon DataSys Reboot Restore Standard to the latest version once the fix is released. Until then, restrict local access to untrusted users and disable the shield.sys driver if not essential. Monitor system logs for suspicious activity related to kernel memory modifications or privilege escalation attempts.
