Executive Summary

OpenAlgo versions 1.0.0.29 through 2.0.3.0 have a flaw where TLS hostname verification and certificate checks are disabled for SMTP connections using STARTTLS and SMTPS. This allows network attackers to intercept SMTP credentials and emails, including password reset links, by presenting fake certificates.

Detection Guidance

Check OpenAlgo version with 'pip show openalgo' or 'openalgo --version'. If version is below 2.0.3.1, the system is vulnerable. Inspect SMTP logs for failed certificate validation errors. Monitor network traffic for unencrypted SMTP connections or unexpected certificate prompts.

Impact Analysis

Attackers can steal your SMTP login credentials and read all emails sent through OpenAlgo, including sensitive password reset links. This could lead to unauthorized access to accounts and data breaches.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal data, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Organizations using affected versions may face compliance violations and legal consequences.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade OpenAlgo to version 2.0.3.1 or later immediately. Regenerate all API keys and passwords. Configure SMTP to use hostname instead of IP address. Enable two-factor authentication for password resets. Review and update email server certificate settings to ensure proper validation.
