Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a deserialization flaw in MoviePilot up to version 3.1.2. It exists in the WorkflowExecutor.restore_context function of app/chain/workflow.py. The issue allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via manipulated pickle payloads sent through the /api/v1/workflow/fork endpoint. The attack requires manage permission and can lead to remote code execution with the privileges of the MoviePilot service process.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires checking for suspicious workflow contexts in the MoviePilot database. Inspect the workflow table for entries with non-JSON 'content' fields, particularly those containing Base64-encoded Pickle data. Look for workflows with paused states that may have been tampered with. Use database queries to filter for malformed or unusually large context fields.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow attackers to run malicious code on your system with the same permissions as the MoviePilot service. This could lead to data theft, credential compromise, or unauthorized access to internal systems. Attackers could exfiltrate sensitive information like API keys or pivot to other systems in your network.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade MoviePilot to version 3.1.3 or later immediately. If upgrading is not possible, remove legacy pickle context support by applying the patch from commit 6034dcc880c13079aeb398dbe32c346ebcd3a6d2. Audit all workflows for suspicious 'content' fields and rotate any exposed credentials. Disable the workflow fork endpoint if not needed.
