Description

A weakness has been identified in Aklivity Zilla up to 1.3.4/2.4.7/2.5.0-rc2. The affected element is the function Path.resolve of the file FileSystemServerFactory of the component http-filesystem Binding. This manipulation of the argument params causes path traversal. Remote exploitation of the attack is possible. The exploit has been made available to the public and could be used for attacks. Upgrading to version 2.5.0-rc3 is sufficient to fix this issue. Patch name: 46a8b15cbea157f7ae8b7cb865809a02fd6b1988. You should upgrade the affected component.

Executive Summary

CVE-2026-120324 is a path traversal vulnerability in Aklivity Zilla up to versions 1.3.4, 2.4.7, and 2.5.0-rc2. The flaw exists in the http-filesystem binding where client-controlled path data from HTTP requests is improperly validated. Attackers can manipulate path parameters to bypass filesystem root restrictions, enabling unauthorized read, write, or delete operations on arbitrary files accessible by the Zilla process.

Detection Guidance

Check Zilla versions below 2.5.0-rc3 with: curl -s https://github.com/aklivity/zilla/releases | grep -E '2\.(4\.|5\.0-rc[0-2])'. Inspect http-filesystem binding configurations for routes using ${params.path} or ${params.tenant} without sanitization. Monitor for unauthorized file access attempts or 404 errors in logs.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows remote unauthenticated attackers to read sensitive files like configuration files or secrets, modify critical system files (e.g., cron jobs), delete important data, or execute arbitrary code by overwriting executable files. In multi-tenant environments, it can break tenant isolation, exposing data across different users or services.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability can lead to severe compliance violations. GDPR requires protecting personal data; unauthorized file access could expose such data. HIPAA mandates safeguarding protected health information; file modification or deletion could compromise integrity. The vulnerability undermines data confidentiality, integrity, and availability, increasing risk of non-compliance and potential regulatory penalties.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Zilla to version 2.5.0-rc3 or later immediately. Review and update http-filesystem binding configurations to avoid using ${params} in path fields. Implement network-level controls to restrict access to Zilla instances until patched.
