Executive Summary

This vulnerability involves the mail backend module in TYPO3 writing submitted settings to page TSconfig without restricting them to valid module configurations. Backend users with access to the mail module can inject arbitrary page TSconfig settings.

Detection Guidance

Check for unauthorized modifications to page TSconfig files in the TYPO3 mail module. Review backend user activity logs for changes made to module configurations. Inspect saved configurations for unexpected or arbitrary settings.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with mail module access could modify page TSconfig to alter system behavior, potentially leading to unauthorized changes, privilege escalation, or disruption of mail services.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability allows backend users with access to the mail module to write arbitrary page TSconfig, which could lead to unauthorized configuration changes. This may impact compliance by enabling data processing or storage configurations that violate GDPR or HIPAA requirements for data protection and access controls.

Mitigation Strategies

Restrict backend user permissions to only necessary module access. Review and remove any unauthorized page TSconfig changes. Update the TYPO3 mail module to the latest patched version if available.
