Executive Summary

This vulnerability allows backend users with access to the mail module to inject arbitrary HTML and JavaScript code into emails or tracked URLs. The injected code is not properly escaped, so when other backend users view the mail preview or report, the malicious code executes in their context.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability involves unescaped HTML and JavaScript injection in the TYPO3 Mail extension backend module. Detection requires checking for unauthorized HTML or script content in mail previews or reports viewed by backend users. Inspect mail module logs and network traffic for suspicious payloads.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow attackers to perform actions on behalf of other users, steal sensitive data, or manipulate the user interface. It primarily affects backend users who interact with the mail module.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, potentially violating GDPR and HIPAA compliance requirements. It may result in data breaches or unauthorized disclosure of personal or health information.

Mitigation Strategies

Disable the TYPO3 Mail extension if not essential. Update to the latest patched version if available. Restrict backend user access to the mail module. Implement input validation and output escaping for HTML content. Monitor for unusual activity in mail previews.
